Lijiang Old Town (Dayan Old Town) 大研古城

Location: Lijiang City, Yunnan Province, about 25 km from Lijiang Airport

Historical Background: Lijiang Old Town is one of China's most perfectly preserved ancient towns — a UNESCO World Heritage Site built by the Naxi people in the late Song dynasty (late 12th century), situated at 2,400m altitude on a high plateau flanked by mountains and watered by a network of canals, brooks, and stone bridges. The town is famous for its ingenious water management system: meltwater from Jade Dragon Snow Mountain was channeled through the town via a network of open canals — the Black Dragon Pool (Heilong Tan) and its ornate bridge being the most iconic — dividing the town into districts each served by its own tributary. The houses, built in the Naxi architectural tradition, feature tiled roofs, whitewashed walls, timber frames, and elaborate woodcarving — the carved doors and windows of Dayan are considered among the finest in China. At its peak in the Ming and Qing dynasties, Lijiang was a major hub on the ancient Tea Horse Road, trading Yunnan tea, horses, and Tibetan goods across the Himalayas into Myanmar, Bhutan, and Tibet. The town survived the Cultural Revolution largely intact because of its remote location. Today it draws millions of visitors, and the challenge of balancing heritage preservation with the demands of mass tourism has made it a national model for sustainable old-town management.

Transportation: Lijiang Airport (LJG) has direct flights from Kunming (45 min), Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu. Lijiang Railway Station (high-speed rail from Dali 40 min, Kunming 3.5 hrs). Local bus 11/4 from railway station to old town. Taxi from airport to old town about Y40.

Best Duration: 2–3 days (old town 1 day; Jade Dragon 1 day; side trips 1 day)

Best Season: Year-round; spring (March–May) for wild flowers; autumn (September–November) for golden forests; avoid Chinese national holidays

Tips: Stay overnight in the old town to experience it after the day-trippers leave — the canals lit by red lanterns at night are magical. Arrive early morning for the best photos.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (Yulong Xue Shan) 玉龙雪山

Location: About 15 km north of Lijiang Old Town, accessible via GL-9013 provincial road

Historical Background: Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is the sacred peak of the Naxi people — a towering wall of thirteen peaks, the highest (Shanzhuroong) at 5,596m, visible from Lijiang Old Town on clear days, its glaciers gleaming white against the blue sky. The mountain is considered the deity of the Naxi people and has been climbed only once in recorded history (in 1986), preserving its wild, pristine character. Its lower slopes are carpeted in alpine meadows, pine forests, and glacial lakes, while the upper reaches are cloaked in permanent snow and ice. The most popular way to visit is the Glacier Park cable car (牦牛坪索道), which ascends to 4,506m, where visitors can walk to a viewpoint overlooking the main peaks. A second cable car (云杉坪索道) takes visitors to Spruce Meadow at 3,240m, surrounded by ancient spruce forest, while the third serves the Blue Moon Valley, a terraced lake system at the mountain's base famous for its turquoise water that reflects the peaks.

Best Duration: 1 full day (half day for cable cars and Blue Moon Valley; full day if including Impression Lijiang)

Best Season: Year-round; December–March for the most dramatic snow coverage; July–August for wildflower meadows

Tips: Acclimatize in Lijiang (2,400m) for at least half a day before ascending above 4,000m. Rent oxygen (Y30–50) at the base. The temperature at the summit can be 15C colder than in town. Book cable car tickets online in peak season.

Lugu Lake (Lugu Hu) 泸沽湖

Location: On the border of Yunnan and Sichuan provinces, about 200 km (4 hrs) from Lijiang

Historical Background: Lugu Lake is one of China's most enchanting natural landscapes — a vast alpine lake at 2,685m, straddling the border between Yunnan and Sichuan provinces, surrounded by mountains and inhabited by the Mosuo people, a matriarchal society with a unique 'walking marriage' tradition (called zuo hun jia, 走婚), in which partners live separately in their mothers' homes and meet only at night. The lake is 48.5 km in circumference, with a surface area of 50 km2, and its clear blue water — fed by mountain streams and underground springs — is among the cleanest in China. The surrounding landscape ranges from dramatic karst mountains to peaceful meadows, and the Mosuo and Naxi villages that dot the shoreline are among the least-altered rural communities in western China. The best way to explore is by boat — the traditional wooden pig-trough boats (猪槽船) that have been used on the lake for centuries.

• Zhoushan Island (赵序湾) — the largest of the lake's three islands, home to a Naxi monastery and panoramic lake views
• Lige Xiu Sen — the most photographed peninsula, with willow trees and crystal-clear water
• Mosuo Waterfront Villages — Lige and Luosheng, traditional villages where visitors can experience the matriarchal culture
• Pig-Trough Boats — the traditional boats poled by Mosuo women, available for hire to explore the lake's coves
• Yuelu Bay (岳罗湾) — the most beautiful sunrise spot on the lake, with mountains framing the rising sun

Transportation: Bus from Lijiang old town to Lugu Lake (Lige entrance): about 4 hours. Alternatively, join a 2-day organized tour. Road is winding — motion sickness tablets recommended.

Best Duration: 1–2 days (2 days recommended to catch both sunrise and sunset)

Best Season: May–October for wild flowers and warm weather; November–April for migratory birds and peaceful off-season atmosphere

Tips: The best sunrise is from Lige Peninsula — set your alarm for 6 AM. Cycling the 120 km lake road is popular but steep in places; e-bikes are widely available for hire.

Yak Meat Hotpot (牦牛肉火锅)

A warming highland staple — tender yak meat simmered in a spicy broth with local mushrooms, potatoes, and seasonal greens. Lijiang's version is distinguished by the Naxi herbs and spices in the broth.

Naxi Pork (纳西烤肉)

Marinated pork belly grilled over pine wood charcoal — the crispy skin, tender meat, and smoky aroma make this the quintessential Lijiang street food, sold from riverside stalls in the old town.

Baba (粑粑)

A fried or steamed Naxi flatbread stuffed with minced pork, vegetables, or sweet fillings — a traditional Naxi snack sold at morning markets throughout Lijiang.
