Zhanqiao Pier (Zhanqiao) 栈桥

Location: Zhanqiao District, at the southern end of Zhongshan Road, Qingdao

Historical Background: Zhanqiao Pier is Qingdao's most iconic landmark — a 440-meter stone pier built in 1891 extending into Qingdao Bay, at the foot of which the German colonial administration built the original Tsingtao Brewery and the German concession that transformed the fishing village into a treaty port city. The pier's famous Huigong Pavilion (回澜阁) at its tip is Qingdao's most photographed image — an octagonal two-story Chinese pavilion with a curved roof that was built in 1936 as a rest house for officials and has become the enduring symbol of the city. From the end of the pier on a clear day, visitors can see across the bay to the mountains of the Shandong Peninsula and the islands of the Laoshan coastline, while the coastal road along the bay — lined with European-style villas, hotels, and linden trees — is one of the most romantic promenades in China.

Best Duration: 1–2 hours at the pier; combine with Badaguan (20-min walk south) and a walk along the seafront promenade

Best Season: Year-round; spring and autumn most comfortable; summer for the beach atmosphere and Qingdao's famous beer gardens

Tips: Come at sunrise or sunset — the light over the bay and the silhouette of Huigong Pavilion are unforgettable. The pier gets extremely crowded on weekends and holidays.

Badaguan Scenic Area (Badaguan) 八大关

Location: Badaguan, Shinan District, Qingdao — south of Zhanqiao, bordered by Peihai Bay to the east and the coast to the south

Historical Background: Badaguan (literally 'Eight Great Passes') is Qingdao's most atmospheric neighborhood — a leafy European-style residential district built during the German and Japanese colonial periods (1897–1945), famous for its tree-lined avenues, pastel-colored European villas, and the extraordinary variety of architectural styles: Tudor, Gothic, Spanish Colonial, Swiss chalet, Russian, and Japanese, often combined on a single building. The district was planned by the German colonial administration as an exclusive residential area for foreign merchants and officials, and was substantially expanded by Japanese developers in the 1920s and 1930s. In spring, the lilac and cherry blossoms in Badaguan are legendary, and in autumn the ginkgo trees turn brilliant gold.

Highlights:

• Princess Castle (Haibao Guangchang) — the most photographed villa, a Spanish-style building with a distinctive red roof on Yulong Road
• Tyrolean Villa (Tiroler Zhuang) — an Austrian-style chalet on Fushan Road, one of the most charming buildings in the district
• Viking Villa — a Scandinavian-style house on Yulong Road, now a popular wedding photography venue
• Pine Tree Villa (Songshu Zhuang) — now the Qingdao Number One Villa Hotel, a stunning property available for dining and events
• The Lilac Garden and Cherry Garden — in spring (April) the district erupts in purple lilac blossoms and pink cherry blossoms

Best Duration: 2–3 hours (walking the streets and visiting the villas); combine with Zhanqiao (20-min walk north)

Best Season: April for lilac and cherry blossoms (peak beauty); May–September for the summer beach atmosphere; October–November for ginkgo gold

Tips: The best walk is from Zhanqiao south along the coastal road, entering Badaguan from the north and continuing to the beach at Shilaoren. Hire a bicycle (Y20–30/day) to cover more ground.

Tsingtao Brewery (Tsingtao Pi Jiu Chang) 青岛啤酒厂

Location: 56 Dengzhou Road, Shibei District, Qingdao (near Zhenhua Road, 1 km north of Zhongshan Road)

Historical Background: The Tsingtao Brewery is the birthplace of China's most famous beer — founded in 1903 by German and British investors as the German-Brewery Company, it produced the first pint of beer in Qingdao on August 15, 1903. Tsingtao beer is today one of the most consumed beers in the world, brewed in dozens of countries and exported to over 100 markets, but the original Tsingtao Brewery in Qingdao remains a working brewery and one of the city's most popular tourist attractions. The tour takes visitors through the original brewing halls — including the fermentation cellars with their original German copper brewing vats — the bottling line, and the historic brewhouse — before ending in the Beer Garden, where a freshly poured pint of Tsingtao straight from the source is included in the ticket price.

Highlights:

• The Original Copper Brewing Vats — the four massive copper vats from the original 1903 German brewery, still in use today
• Fermentation Cellars — the cool underground cellars where the beer ferments, lined with original German engineering
• Historic Bottling Line — the antique bottling equipment, a time capsule of early 20th-century brewing technology
• Beer Garden (Pi Jiu Chang) — the outdoor beer garden at the end of the tour, where a pint of Tsingtao from the source is included in the ticket
• Tsingtao Beer Museum — next door, traces the history of Tsingtao beer from 1903 to the present

Best Duration: 1.5–2 hours (tour takes about 45 min; allow time for the Beer Garden afterward)

Best Season: Year-round; most atmospheric in summer when the Beer Garden is open air; winter tours are quieter

Tips: The best time to visit is late afternoon — do the tour and then stay in the Beer Garden through sunset. The draft beer at the source is noticeably fresher and smoother than bottled Tsingtao. Drink at least two.

Tsingtao Beer (Qingdao Pi Jiu)

Tsingtao beer needs no introduction — but drinking it fresh from the source at the Tsingtao Brewery Beer Garden is a different experience entirely: crisp, clean, with none of the staleness that can affect bottled versions. Qingdao people drink it by the bucket in summer beer gardens.

Spicy Cumin Lamb (Xiangla Ziran Rou)

Qingdao's most beloved late-night street food — lamb skewers grilled over charcoal with cumin, chili, and sesame, served with a cold beer. Available at every beer garden and street stall in summer.

Garlic Clam Noodles (Haige Suanti Mian)

A Qingdao specialty — thin wheat noodles stir-fried with fresh clams, garlic, and chives in a light soy-based sauce. Simple and delicious — available at most Qingdao noodle shops and seafood restaurants.

How to Reach Qingdao

By Air: Qingdao Liuting International Airport (TAO) — direct flights from Beijing (1.5 hrs), Shanghai (1 hr 10 min), and major Chinese cities. Airport bus Line 702 to Qingdao Railway Station (Y20, 1 hr). Metro Line 8 connects the airport to the city center. By Train: Qingdao Railway Station (青岛站, city center near Zhanqiao) — restored German colonial building. Qingdao North Railway Station (青岛北站, Metro Lines 3/8) — high-speed from Beijing 3.5 hrs, Shanghai 4 hrs, Jinan 2.5 hrs.
